Los Angeles Automobile Accidents
State of California 2007 accident statistics
California’s roadways can be a dangerous place to travel. Our state consistently has the highest fatality rate for automobile accidents in the United States. Part of that statistic has to do with a larger number of drivers on the roads—but it is still a reflection of the dangers of driving in our state.
The 2007 FARS (Fatality Analysis Reporting System) statistics tell us a little more about what happens out there on California’s miles of highways, interstates, and urban streets:

- 43.8% were drivers
- 23.6% were passengers
- 16.1% were pedestrians
- 13% were motorcyclists
- 2.5% were bicyclists
- Los Angeles automobile accidents topped the list with 756 fatalities

While an accident is hard to predict, it is possible to isolate certain contributing factors that have potential to cause a wreck:
- Weather & road conditions—low visibility, freezing rain, black ice, etc.
- Drivers under the influence of drugs & alcohol—the potential risk rises on weekend nights & holidays
- Improperly maintained roads
- Aggressive driving on congested roads
Remember defensive driving tactics and use them to protect yourself. If you see another car driving erratically, pull over and let them pass. When you get in an accident, accept emergency medical care and get legal help right away!
